Class B CDL Course

Our Class B CDL training course equips students with the skills needed to safely operate straight trucks, dump trucks, delivery trucks, and other Class B vehicles. This two to three-week course combines flexible online learning, expert instruction, simulator training, and hands-on driving experience. Whether you’re starting a new career or upskilling for a local driving position, our program prepares you to pass the DOT skills exam and enter the workforce with confidence.

Award Type:


Certificate of Completion from Iowa Western Community College & Commercial Driver’s License from the American Association of Motor Vehicles Administration (AAMVA)

Learning Outcomes:


  • Online Entry-Level Driver Theory (ELDT): Complete FMCSA-required training on federal regulations, driving safety, and vehicle operation.
  • Hands-On Driving Training: Practice behind the wheel of Class B vehicles, including maneuvers such as backing, turning, and city driving.
  • State-of-the-Art Simulators: Train in a virtual environment using JJ Keller’s industry-recognized curriculum before transitioning to live vehicles.
  • CDL Testing On-Site: Take your DOT skills test with an Iowa DOT-certified examiner at the IWCC training site.

Educational Objectives:


  • Academic: Learn CDL Class B-specific federal/state regulations, pre-trip inspections, safe vehicle operation, and traffic law compliance.
  • Professional: Prepare students for employment as entry-level commercial drivers in industries such as delivery, waste management, transit, and construction.
  • Vocational: Develop competency in straight vehicle operation, navigation, and hazard management aligned with FMCSA standards.

Course Outline:


Week 1 - Focus: Theory, Simulators and Pre-Trip Inspections

  • ELDT Theory (JJ Keller Curriculum): pre-trip inspections, traffic safety, braking systems
  • Simulator Training: basic handling for Class B vehicles
  • Introduction to range and road driving (automatic transmission)
  • Range: pre-trip walkthroughs

Week 2 - Focus: Backing, Road Training and City Driving

  • Range: basic turning, straight-line backing and off-set backing maneuvers + initial road drives
  • Focused training on urban navigation, stops, lane control
  • Continued practice on safe turns and defensive driving

Week 3 - Focus: Road Training & DOT Test Preparation

  • Final driving skills refinement and practice exams
  • On-site DOT testing preparation
  • Final evaluations and vehicle inspection review
