Certified Medication Aide

This course prepares providers to administer non-parenteral medications in health care facilities.  This course is approved by the Iowa Dept. of Inspection and Appeals and Licensure.

Learning Outcomes:


Successful complete the state of Iowa Certified Medication Aide curriculum, and the proctored state of Iowa Medication Aide Written Exam. Success will qualify individuals to administer non-parenteral medication in a DIAL recognized facility as an Iowa Certified Medication Aide.

Course Outline:


  • 6-hour lecture, state mandated pre-requisite Prepare to Care Core.
  • 42 hours of Medication Aide curriculum lecture
  • 12 hours of state-mandated clinical at the students place of employment with their staff RN.
  • 2 hours for the state written, proctored exam.

Admission Requirements:


Students must be employed at an Iowa facility, they must have been employed at their Iowa facility for a minimum of 480 consecutive hours, they must have a staff RN to sponsor their 12 hours of mandated clinical, if the student is employed at a long-term care facility, they must also be on the Iowa Direct Care Worker’s Registry.  

Attendance Requirements:


Students must attend a minimum of 46 hours of the didactic portion of this course. Nothing less than 12 hours of clinical will be accepted. Final Exam is a state mandate.  Students are allowed six weeks to complete the clinical portion of this course, if needed.  Students must obtain an 80% average for successful completion of this course.

Instructor Qualification:


Instructor is registered, certified, or licensed in the occupational area in which the state requires registration, certification or licensure for the occupational area in which the instructor is teaching.
