Substitute Teacher Authorization


State of Iowa Substitute Teacher Authorization. Minimum educational requirements are 60 units of completed college credits. Ideal for a person without a teaching degree who wants to become a substitute teacher.  Paraeducators can also take this course to be able to substitute in SPED classrooms.

Certificate of Completion from Iowa Western Community College & Authorization from Area Education Agencies (AEA) and Iowa Board of Educational Examiners (BoEE)

Admission Requirements:


Individuals are required to have an existing para-educator certificate,*, 60 college credits, an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution to sub in K-12 in the State of Iowa.  

Attendance Requirements:


Must attend all 4 days, must complete self-pace course

Instructor Qualification:


Instructor is registered, certified, or licensed in the occupational area in which the state requires registration, certification or licensure for the occupational area in which the instructor is teaching.
