Machine Process Theory and Application

This 11-week, 33-hour course introduces students to fundamental machine shop practices, emphasizing shop safety, proper use of hand tools, basic machining processes, and measuring techniques. Students gain experience using a range of tools and equipment, including precision measuring instruments and basic machine shop tools. Emphasis is placed on safety, tool maintenance, and machining simple parts to specified tolerances. In addition, three hours of instruction are dedicated to the development of soft skills such as communication, teamwork, and professionalism.

11 Weeks (33 Hours Total) Course Outline:
1. Introduction to Machine Shop & Safety Principles - 3 hours - Shop orientation, PPE, hazard recognition, OSHA basics
2. Hand Tools: Identification, Use, and Maintenance - 3 hours - Files, hammers, wrenches, screwdrivers, deburring tools
3. Precision Measuring Instruments - 3 hours - Micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and dial indicators
4. Introduction to Machining Theory - 3 hours - Machining terms, material properties, speeds and feeds
5. Drilling Operations - 3 hours - Drill press operation, tool selection, drill sizing
6. Lathe Operations - 4 hours - Facing, turning, parting, tool setup, work holding
7. Milling Operations - 4 hours - Types of mills, cutting tools, basic milling operations
8. Blueprint Reading & Tolerances - 3 hours - Interpreting part drawings, dimensional tolerances, callouts
9. Machining Practice Lab: Simple Part Production - 4 hours - Machining assigned parts using provided specifications
10. Tool Care & Maintenance - 2 hours - Cleaning, storing, and sharpening cutting tools
11. Soft Skills Development - 3 hours - Teamwork, communication, time management, and workplace behavior

If a student misses two or more classes their employer will be notified that they have missed two classes. IWCC will also notify the company every time that same individual misses any other classes. The student can work with the instructor to make up the class work and class time. Instructor Qualification:
Instructor is registered, certified, or licensed in the occupational area in which the state requires registration, certification or licensure for the occupational area in which the instructor is teaching. |
