Asbestos Abatement Worker Training (EPA Brownfields Job Training)

This course is designed to meet the standards of The Asbestos Model Accreditation Plan (29 CFR 1910.1001) training courses are approved by the EPA. It will address a variety of specialized abatement topics, such as Pre-asbestos abatement work activities, work area preparation, establishing decontamination units, PPE, worker decontamination procedures, practical hands-on exercises, and proper handling and disposal of ACM wastes.

Learning Outcomes:


 This course is 32 hours in duration and covers EPA-approved abatement techniques, including pre-abatement activities, site preparation, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and safe disposal of asbestos-containing materials (ACM). Upon completion, each qualifying participant will receive a Certificate of Completion that they can use for licensing in the States of Iowa and Missouri.

Course Outline:


Day 1 (8 Hours) - Introduction & Regulatory Overview

  • Course Introduction / Objectives / Pre-Test - 0.5 hr

  • History and Health Effects of Asbestos Exposure - 1.5 hrs

  • Overview of Asbestos Regulations (OSHA, EPA, State) - 2 hrs

  • Types and Uses of Asbestos Materials (ACM) - 1 hr

  • Medical Surveillance, Recordkeeping, and Worker Rights - 1 hr

  • Introduction to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - 2 hrs


Day 2 (8 Hours) - Work Practices & Safety Protocols

  • Respirators: Selection, Fit Testing, and Use - 2 hrs

  • Protective Clothing and Decontamination Procedures - 2 hrs

  • Work Area Preparation & Containment Design - 2 hrs

  • Hands-On: Donning/Doffing PPE & Respirator Practice - 2 hrs


Day 3 (8 Hours) - Abatement Procedures

  • Abatement Methods and Techniques - 2 hrs

  • Setting Up Decontamination Units - 1.5 hrs

  • Engineering Controls and Work Practice Controls - 1.5 hrs

  • Waste Handling, Labeling, Storage, and Disposal - 1.5 hrs

  • Hands-On: Containment Setup Simulation - 1.5 hrs


Day 4 (8 Hours) - Practical Skills & Assessment

  • Final Review of Key Concepts & Regulations - 1 hr

  • Hands-On: Simulated Asbestos Removal Exercise - 3 hrs

  • Decontamination Simulation and Evaluation - 2 hrs

  • Course Post-Test and Feedback - 1 hr

  • Issuance of Certificates / Licensing Guidance (IA & MO) - 1 hr

Instructor is registered, certified, or licensed in the occupational area in which the state requires registration, certification or licensure for the occupational area in which the instructor is teaching.
