OSHA LEAD Awareness (EPA Brownfields Job Training)

The course provides an overview of the OSHA lead standard for general industry (29 CFR 1910.1025), including key safety controls, permissible exposure limits, risks associated with lead exposure, monitoring for lead exposure, and medical surveillance and recordkeeping.

Learning Outcomes:


This course is two hours in duration and covers an overview of OSHA’s Lead in Construction Standards, permissible exposure limits, and best practices for monitoring and minimizing exposure to lead hazards. Upon completion, each qualifying participant will receive an OSHA Lead Awareness Certificate.

Course Outline:


I. Introduction to Lead Hazards & Regulatory Overview (20 minutes)

  • Introduction and course objectives
  • What is lead? Where it’s found in workplaces
  • Health risks and exposure effects
  • Overview of OSHA lead standards (General Industry and Construction)

II. Exposure Limits and Monitoring (20 minutes)

  • Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL)
  • Action Level (AL) and monitoring requirements
  • Exposure assessment methods and frequency
  • Responsibilities of employers and employees

III. Control Measures and Work Practices (25 minutes)

  • Engineering and administrative controls
  • Housekeeping and hygiene practices
  • Safe work procedures
  • Signage and labeling requirements

IV. Personal Protective Equipment & Medical Surveillance (25 minutes)

  • Proper use of PPE (respirators, gloves, coveralls)
  • When PPE is required
  • Medical surveillance requirements under OSHA
  • Employee rights under OSHA

V. Recordkeeping, Rights, and Awareness Certificate (20 minutes)

  • Recordkeeping requirements for employers
  • Worker rights and responsibilities
  • Final review and Q&A
  • Issuance of Certificate of Completion
