OSHA Hazard Communication (EPA Brownfields Job Training)

In this course, students will learn the requirements of chemical labeling and the use of safety data sheets (SDSs) to identify chemical properties, physical health and environmental hazards; protective measures; and safety precautions for handling, storing, and transporting chemicals. This course will follow Regulations (CFR) 1910.1200) in teaching the requirements for classifying chemicals on labels and SDSs to help employees understand workplace chemical hazards.

Learning Outcomes:


This course is two hours in duration and covers training on interpreting chemical labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS), with emphasis on the safe handling, storage, and transportation of hazardous substances. Upon completion, each qualifying participant will receive an OSHA Hazard Communication Certificate. New Horizons will supply all student training booklets and supplies necessary to conduct this course.

Introduction to OSHA Hazard Communication Standard and course objectives

Chemical Labeling Requirements

Explanation of OSHA-required label elements including pictograms, signal words, hazard statements

Safety Data Sheets (SDS) Overview

Detailed review of SDS sections, how to read and interpret safety data sheets

Physical, Health, and Environmental Hazards

Identification and examples of common hazards found in workplace chemicals

Protective Measures and Safety Precautions

Recommended PPE, safe handling techniques, storage guidelines, and transportation precautions

Regulatory Compliance and Employee Rights

OSHA employee rights, employer responsibilities, and recordkeeping requirements

Review, Q&A, and Course Conclusion

Summary of key points, participant questions, and information about certification
